When one of your favorite families adds another member to its ranks, it’s a lot for a heart to handle. Layer on top of that a toddler who can now say your name — why is “Kallie” so much sweeter from the lips of a 4-year-old? — and a Catboy suit and a dear friend and it’s all just too much. Needless to say, this was such a happy morning with the Jacksons — in their beautiful new home, no less! The occasion: welcoming baby William to the world, and this wonderful family. Sarah and Paul, it’s always a delight to be in your company. You make beautiful children, and I’m honored to have captured your first photos as a unit of four.

Amy and Scotty went to St. Olaf together, so it was fitting that their first photoshoot as a family of five was at the Olaf prairie. We had a perfect early fall evening, just cool enough for baby Olive’s adorable knee-highs, but warm enough for her romper that I couldn’t get enough of! Big brother Wesley and puppy Esther had a lot to explore, but between our rock and dirt excavations, we got a ton of sweet moments capturing how much this family truly seems to enjoy each other.

This adorably sweet crew brought the best photo session energy. It’s a lot to ask anyone, let alone those under six, to put on nice clothes and go to a strange place without a jungle gym on a hot night to do what an (almost) stranger tells you to do. But clearly these fine folks had been practicing their “cheeeeeeeeese!” They even (mostly) ignored the intense mountain bikers zooming by. Hot tip: Murphy-Hanrehan seems to be The Place for mountain biking.

I met Jillian, Chad, Reese, Shep, Charlie, and Taco for the first time the evening of our Northfield family photo session, but they are one of those families that immediately welcomes you into the fold and make you feel as though you’ve known them for years. Which is great, because they’re practically neighbors and I can’t wait to run into them again on the river trail.

If you ask me what kind of dog I want, there is no particular breed, just a very strong desire that it has the lovable trait of a little tongue that can’t stay in its mouth. (A severe underbite will also suffice.) In that regard, Winston is my dream dog, by the fact of not having many teeth left. He’s lived a long, life where he’s both loved and been loved well. In his older age, his mom, Kelly, asked if we could capture him at home with the family.

I love toddler sessions because they teach me to let go of any sense of control and just follow their energy. It’s amazing that even at the age of two, so much of our personality is already developed. Wilma was bubbly, curious, independent, and playful — and rightly suspicious of the stranger with a camera trying to coax her into a tent fort! So, we changed plans and her wonderful mother started reading to us both instead. The camera (and person holding it) melted away, and I got to see Wilma’s shyness fall away and her wonderful smile and laugh slip out.

o many of us have been anxiously, eagerly awaiting Suvi James’ arrival, and obviously none more so than her glowing parents. It’s been a while since I’ve been in the wondrous presence of a 2-week old baby. Suvi nearly made my heart stop with her perfection. She already has wise, searching eyes and a range of emotional expressions. Whether she yawned, wailed, or smiled, it was magic. All photo shoots have an element of sacredness for me, but knowing how brief Suvi will be this tiny and fresh to the world gave this bearing witness a special quality. I delighted in every moment of the shoot itself, as well as the editing.

Kelly is a fellow Northfield newcomer and new friend. During our first friend date she immediately felt like a kindred spirit. Hanging out with her family — Aaron and Mary Lou — was so relaxed and fun, it verified that she keeps good company, to boot. We were graced with one last splendid, warm fall Saturday afternoon for this session. We grabbed some golden hour sunbeams — and perhaps a few burrs from the prairie grasses. They busted out a little dance party on the bridge (instigated by Kelly and Mary Lou), relived some wedding day geese scaring, and were overall so photogenic and wonderful our time together flew by.

It’s hard to beat two dogs and a two-year-old wearing deer boots. Add in an absolutely perfect fall afternoon, a childhood friend, and sweet family that was there at all your tennis matches and band concerts…well, let’s just say this was a special family session.

It was nearly a year ago that I first got to spend an afternoon with the Jacksons taking photos, and the second time was even better. Thomas’s shyness had faded and his full personality was on display — fun, inquisitive, and clearly delighted by his parents. I love how intimate and relaxed both sessions were. We hung out on the dock right near their South Minneapolis home and played with the bubble gun and orchestrated a tickle fight, then ventured over to the park.
