Jason and I will make a drive if the destination involves good baked goods, excellent coffee, and a welcoming spot to hang out. The Basic Place in Hammond, Minnesota has all of these things and more:
It involves a great driftless drive to get to it.
The owners Devon and Ross are two of the best people the world has.
Kids love this place as much as the adults; there’s a sunny art and play corner up front.
Mimosas on tap, plus a nice NA and alcoholic beverage selection.
A well-curated shopping shelf with top-shelf tinned fish, cookbooks, colorful bandanas, and other goods to inspire a river-side picnic.
Some of my favorite paintings on the wall.
Hammond is about a 20-minute drive north of Rochester, and it’s about 50 minutes from Northfield. The biscuit-style cinnamon rolls are a favorite or ours, but really, we haven’t had anything bad. Currently, the Basic Place is only only Fridays and Saturdays. I’m excited to see they’ve started hosting musical events, and I’m sure more goodness is to come.
