If you ask me what kind of dog I want, there is no particular breed, just a very strong desire that it has the lovable trait of a little tongue that can’t stay in its mouth. (A severe underbite will also suffice.) In that regard, Winston is my dream dog, by the fact of not having many teeth left. He’s lived a long, life where he’s both loved and been loved well. In his older age, his mom, Kelly, asked if we could capture him at home with the family.
Winston definitely hides his age well. When I arrived on a grey March evening, he had the energy of a puppy. He also has some of the best chew toys that even as a human I was jealous of. For the purpose of photos, he was allowed on the prized Larry Gould couch (if you know, you know). We also spent a little time in a favorite mother-puppy place: the cozy window seat overlooking the neighborhood. I wish we had more photos of my first pet, our three-legged collie, Alex, and I kept thinking going through these how special these will be in those moments when our furry family members are no longer with us.
Kelly, thanks for this invite to spend more time with Winston and to feel like part of the family for the evening. In the midst of so much heartbreak and worry, these puppy photos were just what my weary soul needed.
