We made a last minute pivot with Jonas’s senior photos, deciding to venture up to MCAD and the Minneapolis Institute of Art. It was a windy day as fall faded closer to winter, but despite the weather, we had a blast exploring different sculptures and murals as backdrops. The location suited Jonas: cool, complex, surprising, and architectural (his anticipated future career path). As a bonus, given the blustery weather, we nearly had the museum grounds to ourselves. Jonas and Emily, thanks for this invitation and adventure!

Of the many things I love about living in Northfield, our local CSA (community supported agriculture) farm community is definitely in the top 10. Every week from June to November, we drive or bike 5 minutes north of town to pick up our weekly produce. Our CSA farm shares land with Little Hill Berry Farm. Having grown up on a farm, I love how this tradition keeps me connected to the ups-and-downs of farming life, but mostly, I love how beautiful and vibrant these land plots are — native pollinator plants line the drive, hoop houses protect tidy rows of seedlings and berry bushes, and the all-you-can-pick flower fields are so textural and colorful.

It was a happy accident — a Google search error returning a different Kallie R doing photography in Minnesota — that led me to meeting Cassie and her mom. I love how vibrant this shoot ended up being, thanks to all the color and sparkle Cassie brought, plus the good benefit of a perfect August night. We wandered downtown Northfield, then caught the sinking sun out at the Arb.

Bridget’s senior photo session in downtown St. Paul was filled with cool sculptures, late summer flowers, the most amazing outfits, and a lot of laughter. Her mom is one of my dearest former colleagues, and after photographing Bridget’s incredibly cool sibling a couple years ago, I had high expectations going into this shoot. Bridget is just as cool and sweet and smart as their older sibling, but with her own confidence and completely unique personality.

David reached out about family photos for a Mother’s Day gift and I was already a fan of this family. I love the opportunity to use a photo session as a special gift. As soon as I met Sophie, I knew it was going to be a fun night! She brought so much energy and laughter and joy. I also love how down-to-clown her mom, Katherine, was. Despite this being a HOT summer night, it was still a very chill session. These three have a really fun, easy dynamic, which carried through to these photos. I so enjoyed getting to hang with you all for an evening!

Madeline and Cale are both teachers. And you know that they’re the fun teachers, the ones you’ll still remember into middle age, because you laughed a lot, while somehow still learning everything. But it’s also clear that as students, Madeline would have been the class sass and Cale would have been rolling his eyes at her to mask his huge crush on the smart, gorgeous girl a few rows over.

In March, we made a trip to see family in Seattle and tacked on a few days in the San Juan Islands. I’ve not spent much time in the Pacific Northwest, and as a person who doesn’t like rain, I was admittedly a bit nervous to go in March. When I found out the San Juan Islands are in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains, however, I started making plans. Plus, I’m kind of fascinated by island communities.

Sophia calls Missouri home, but I had the good fortune to meet up with her during her Minnesota summer, when she comes up to stay with family. She’ll be a senior in the fall, and so we spent a beautiful evening getting senior portraits. She was joined by her aunt Tracey and my good friend Caitlin, and the four of us made a good crew, handling jokes-on-command and turning into a portable changing station when necessary.

Florida Keys Sailing Adventure
We usually don’t have New Year’s Eve plans beyond sitting in front of our fire and staying warm. However, my brother Trevor was turning 40, and he’s a New Year’s Eve baby. His girlfriend planned a 4-day, 3-night sailing trip to the Florida Keys and they graciously invited us along. We couldn’t say no!

Ever since I was a child, I’ve had an obsession with bathrooms. They are my favorite rooms and no matter where I’ve lived, it’s the room I spend the most time in — I’ll prop up against a bathtub to do homework, to check emails. I take daily baths. Sometimes I’ll even nap in the bathroom. All this oversharing to say: I wanted our bathroom to feel like a space I loved.
