I don’t even know where to start with this photoshoot. The rainbow wall backdrop of Old Abe’s? The most adorable cameo appearance by niece Suvi, who absolutely melted me in her matching denim overalls? (And that bow!!) The transition from funky patchwork pants and crocheted tank to the most chic emerald jumpsuit as we lit up downtown Rochester? The daisies + hat + multicolor afghan for golden hour meadow shots? That moment when mom and daughter (and let’s be honest, photographer) teared up when we all realized what a huge milestone moment this is?
I mean, those were all great. But the real highlight was spending a few glorious hours in the company of Maddy and getting to see so many facets of her personality. I know Maddy through her big sister, who, with full disclaimer, is one of my favorite people. So, it was a delight to witness her shared sense of effortless style and creativity, a sisterly spunk, the same head-thrown-back belly laugh (most of the time induced by mom — those two have the sweetest relationship ever!), and the mature ability not only to contain multitudes but to so fully own them all.
That said, Maddy is so uniquely herself. At a time of life when it’s easy to feel insecure, Maddy oozes confidence yet humility. When it might be uncool to be BFFs with your mom, this mother-daughter duo is incredibly adorable in their affection for each other. As a fellow small-town girl, I remember trying to hedge my fashion choices, scared to stick out too much; it was empowering to see Maddy donning ‘fits that would be at home in LA, could be featured in Teen Vogue, and at the same time, had a classic streak to them. I also loved that while she could easily strike a glam pose that would make many models jealous, she has a laugh that is always just below the surface.
Maddy, this is going to be such a fun year ahead. And, I look forward to following you as a favorite influencer for years to come. More than your fashion being on-point, I am inspired by how boldly you speak out for and stand with others, your sense of adventure, the clear joy you have for the beauty of this life, and the way you love those around you. It was a true honor to capture this moment of it.
